Winter 2009
In this issue
In October, The American Kennel Club hosted 36,000 people over two days at Meet the Breeds in New York City. With the participation of nearly 200 dog clubs and the support of over 100 vendors and 16 sponsors, the event was an unqualified success, featuring more than 115,000 square feet of festivities. Read AKC’s 2008 Breeder of the Year Working Group recipient Lilian Ostermiller’s view on the importance of such educational initiatives. Our second “Advice from the Breeder” column this issue is from renowned breeder Doug Johnson, our 2005 Breeder of the Year Sporting Group recipient, on the many ways we keep the passion alive as breeders in the sport of purebred dogs.
From the Royal Canin’s Breeder Handbook we have an article by Dr. Bretaigne Jones on the topic of lactation.
This issue’s “Inside AKC” piece is on the AKC’s exciting new S.T.A.R. Puppy program written by Mary Burch, Director of AKC Canine Good Citizen.
In addition, we have an article on Canine Influenza by Dr. Edward J. Dubovi, director of the virology laboratory at Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center. And of course our feature story is Part Two in our “Whelping Preparedness” series: “Whelping Tips From Experienced Breeders.”
I hope that you will find this issue of AKC Breeder to be both enjoyable and educational.
